Foods Processing Plant

Boiler Replacement Reduces Downtime
and Meets NOx Regulations

Boiling It Down

Project leads: BEC and Canseco Boilers

Client: Foods Processing Plant

Challenges: Frequent boiler downtime and strict NOx regulations

Solution: Low NOx replacement boiler to reduce downtime and meet regulations

A large foods processing plant and co-packing company with FDA, organic, BRCGS, and halal certifications in Southern California was experiencing frequent boiler downtime, causing productivity issues and higher fuel costs. Looking for solutions, the plant went to Canseco Boilers. Knowing the job would need to meet California’s strict NOx regulations, Canseco brought in BEC for its expertise in high-pressure steam and ultra-low NOx burners.

To meet both the customer’s parameters and the state’s regulations, a Three-Pass Scotch Marine boiler, a Power Flame ultra-low NOx high turndown burner and a HeatSponge economizer were selected as the right equipment for the job.

To meet sub 5 PPM NOx regulations and pass the source test, two options were considered: flue gas recirculation (FGR) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR). FGR works by recirculating some of the flue gas into the burner, causing the overall flame temperature in the boiler to lower, which reduces the amount of NOx produced. Unlike FGR, where less NOx is produced, SCR works reactively, removing the produced NOx with ammonia post-combustion. SCR also has additional costs, including the installation and maintenance of a pulse system, and the ongoing costs of purchasing ammonia or an ammonia derivative. Considering these factors, an ultra-lox NOx burner with FGR was selected as the more cost-effective approach.

Post-installation, it’s estimated that the new system will increase efficiency to 84% or more, with a 10% increase in fuel savings*, while also meeting 5 PPM low NOx regulations. Thanks to innovative thinking and collaboration, the foods processing plant now has the system it needs to run consistently and efficiently.
