Lurie Children’s Hospital –
Controls Modernization
At Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, boiler plant reliability is mission critical. The existing system utilized legacy Cleaver-Brooks Hawk controls, which limited flexibility and required support exclusively through the OEM channel. Over time, this created operational risk due to long response times, limited service options, and reduced transparency within the control architecture.
BEC in partnership with an installing contractor executed a full controls modernization, replacing the Cleaver Brooks Hawk platform on four (4) gas/oil boilers, two (2) deaerators – primary and backup, and two (2) surge tanks – primary and backup with new Siemens combustion controls. This transition moved the hospital to an open, widely supported control architecture that:
- Eliminated single-supplier dependency
- Improved service responsiveness
- Enhanced diagnostic transparency
- Increased long-term supportability
The upgrade also included a new SCC Master Panel with advanced boiler plant lead-lag sequencing, improving load sharing, enabling smoother staging, and allowing the plant to respond more efficiently to varying steam demand.
Most importantly, the entire upgrade was executed without disrupting hospital operations. Through detailed pre-planning, phased implementation, and deep boiler room expertise, BEC completed the transition with zero downtime to the facility.
The end result is a cohesive, fully integrated boiler room controls package with a single connection point to the Building Management System, providing streamlined integration, centralized visibility, and long-term reliability.
